How you cut and serve kale changes as your baby grows. That is set out age by age below.
How to prepare kale, age by age
- 6 to 8 months
- Steam until very soft, blend into a smooth purée — combine with sweeter veg like sweet potato.
- 9 to 11 months
- Finely chopped and mixed into purées or soft foods.
- 12 to 17 months
- Finely chopped steamed kale mixed into mashed foods.
- 18 months and over
- Small tender pieces — remove tough stems.
Is kale an allergen?
Kale is not one of the main food allergens. Any new food can cause a reaction the first time it is offered, so give it on its own and stay with your baby while they eat.
Is kale good for babies?
Kale is one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables available. Exceptionally rich in vitamins K, A, and C, plus calcium and iron. Its slightly bitter flavour is best introduced blended with sweeter foods. Early exposure to bitter flavours helps prevent picky eating later.
